Commercial Kitchen Design FAQs
What are the key considerations when designing a commercial kitchen?
For your commercial kitchen design layout to be successful, consider the following:
- Functional Delivery Area/Goods In
Sufficient Storage Space
Food Preparation Areas
Cooking Stations
Waste Areas Away From Preparation And Cleaning
Stations
Service Areas
Dishwashing Areas and Plumbing
Extraction, Ventilation and Gas Safety
Catering Flow
See our blog delving deeper into these 9 elements to understand the parts they play in your restaurant kitchen layout.
How long does it take to design a commercial kitchen?
Design and installation time for a commercial kitchen depends on a variety of factors, including scale, complexity, the number of barriers and obstacles to account for, client decision-making and amends.
How do you ensure compliance with health and safety regulations in kitchen design?
Ensuring health and safety compliance in a commercial kitchen starts with design. This should include proper ventilation to remove hazardous fumes which would otherwise impair breathing and vision for cooks.
Hygiene features are also essential, including separate sinks for washing hands and equipment and separate prep stations for meat, allergens and other foods.
Food storage spaces must be carefully considered and should be compliant with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points.
Floors should also be non-slip for employee safety, with drainage systems for spills. Counters should be easily wipeable for hygiene.
However, the majority of health and safety compliance comes after the design and installation of your commercial kitchen and includes:
- Gas safety system checks
Regular risk assessments
Regular maintenance and cleaning to prevent dangerous breakdowns/contamination
Ensuring employees are trained on cleaning equipment properly
See our blog to discover how commercial kitchen design is essential to food safety.
How do you create a sustainable commercial kitchen design?
The biggest factor in designing a sustainable commercial kitchen is building a kitchen to last, with high quality equipment that won’t need frequent replacement or repair.
Maintaining this equipment carefully will also help it to last longer, avoiding unnecessary waste. You can achieve this with our planned preventative maintenance program.
You can also choose to partner with an ESG-focused supplier for your commercial kitchen fit-out. At Airedale, we work with ESG experts Apex as part of our continuing mission toward carbon neutrality.
Finally, reducing food waste is one of the most significant sustainability challenges for commercial kitchens. Our waste reduction guide can help you to cut back on unnecessary excess.
