Commercial Kitchen Gas Safety FAQs
What are the gas safety regulations for a commercial kitchen in the UK?
If your commercial kitchen uses gas-powered equipment, it’s your legal responsibility to have it inspected every 12 months and obtain a valid Gas Safety Certificate. This requirement has been in place since the UK Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations came into effect in 1998.
The gas safe engineer who performs the check must also be appropriately qualified. This means being qualified for both the type of gas used in your commercial kitchen and the type of gas appliances, in addition to the standard COCN1 (Core Commercial Gas Safety) Qualification. Equipment-specific gas qualifications include:
- COMCAT1 for open and solid top range cookers, bain maries, hot plates and combi ovens
- COMCAT2 for pressure water boilers and pressure steamers
- COMCAT3 for fryers, griddles and grills
- COMCAT4 for fish and chip ranges specifically
- COMCAT5 for forced draught burner appliances like pizza ovens
An additional qualification under Commercial/Mobile Catering / LPG is required for mobile catering vehicles, as well as a qualification for the equipment type.
Why is gas safety important in a commercial kitchen?
Many commercial kitchens use gas appliances, which all pose a risk if not looked after. Ensuring that these gas appliances are well-maintained is therefore vital to fulfilling your obligations according to The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.
